I don’t always flush the toilet. There it is. I have said it. It’s out there. Oh and I am proud of it. Water is a scarce commodity in this world, so it makes sense not to always flush it down the pipes.
While you may not want to see your fellow worker’s papery leftovers in the bowl, my advice is simply not to look. Put up a sign that can look something like this:
IF IT’S YELLOW, LET IT MELLOW
IF IT’S BROWN, FLUSH IT DOWN
There, that says it all. Figure out how many times you go to the toilet in your office, multiply it by the number of people in your workplace and this amounts to a lot of water. If you really want to scare yourself, multiply it by the number of offices in your building, then the number of buildings in your city, then…oh we are pouring enormous amounts of fresh water down the pipes when we don’t have to.
So let’s not be squeamish about our bodily wastes or anyone else’s, especially when you don’t actually see anything, except a bit of submerged paper!
As a overly sanitized american, i was at first unsettled by this practice when visiting friends abroad (this was mostly in homes, however, not public toilets). But it's a sensible and evolved practice that needs to take hold here in the U.S. -- only flush when you need to and save all those wasted gallons of precious water. I am also horrified when i see people treating the toilet like a wastebasket, dropping tissues or clean paper products into it and flushing them away.

We're squeamish about this stuff at the office, but I'd contend that the toilet in my office building is cleaner than the one in my house -- the work bathroom is cleaned daily, whereas mine at home...well, let's just say I don't get around to the housework quite so frequently. The point is, there may be fewer sanitation-related reasons to flush so frequently at work, and by easing up on the power-flush toilets here we can make our office buildings less harmful. Thanks!
