Betsy: Once an entrepreneur takes money, what recommendations do you have for them in terms of managing that relationship with a VC, whether it is one or several?

David: Well, I would say that it is fair to manage it. And the way you manage it is to…VC’s have certain requests of the entrepreneurs with whom they work and entrepreneurs should have certain requests of the VC’s with whom they work. As long as that is the case, I think that you will have a pretty healthy relationship. Now, the question is can those ... are those requests rational and reasonable? And, I have seen the answer be no on both ends. I have seen investors who make very specific reporting demands that just don’t make a lot of sense for the business of the company. And so that in that instance say "I tracked the set of metrics that make sense for my business and if you don’t think I am tracking the business metrics that makes sense, let’s have a conversation about that. But I am not going to create metrics for you that are separate from the metrics that by which I measure my own business". That sort of thing. Where an investor might create work for the entrepreneur that is not in fact additive to the value of the company. I don’t believe in any of that. So I am hoping that if my entrepreneurs are listening and they think I do that, like email me immediately, tell me to cut it out. I think that the entrepreneurs have every right to say “hey, you know, I want to talk to you about these particular issues” or “I’d like you to introduce me to this set of people” or “who do you know on this list of potential customers” or “let’s get together once a week and have breakfast and talk about business and you tell me how you can be helpful” and those sorts of things. And I have entrepreneurs with whom I meet weekly and I have entrepreneurs with whom I meet you know every other month at the board meeting and exchange emails occasionally in between. And those could both be great models depending on how the business is doing and where the company is and how seasoned the entrepreneur is and how much help I can provide. I would say actively manage it. Ask for what you want because you know as an investor I have a lot at stake and I hope you will.
