8. Carefully Consider Whether You'll Be Able to Collect on a Judgment

It rarely makes sense to file a lawsuit if you know in advance that it is unlikely you will collect on a judgment. Conduct a thorough investigation of the party you wish to sue to determine what types of assets they have to satisfy any judgment you might receive. You can't squeeze blood from a stone.

On the other hand, you may feel the need to sue on principle. That may be all right, as long as you are making the decision rationally and are taking all other considerations into account.
